The Credit Subcommittee originated out of the concern expressed at MBCC meetings about the relatively low percentage of homeownership among African-American residents of Pittsburgh. The PCRG Annual Mortgage Lending Study
provided the research background showing that, for African-American borrowers, credit history was a disproportionately common reason for mortgage loan denial.
The Credit Subcommitte intends to work with nonprofit, for-profit, and government partners to improve credit education and financing among the target population. Long-term goals for the Credit Subcommittee include:
- Increasing homeownership among the African-American community in Allegheny County
- Overcoming the mentality of “I could never own a home.”
- Normalizing the credit issue in lending
