The Credit Subcommittee originated out of the concern expressed at MBCC meetings about the relatively low percentage of homeownership among African-American residents of Pittsburgh. The PCRG Annual Mortgage Lending Study provided the research background showing that, for African-American borrowers, credit history was a disproportionately common reason for mortgage loan denial.

The Credit Subcommitte intends to work with nonprofit, for-profit, and government partners to improve credit education and financing among the target population. Long-term goals for the Credit Subcommittee include:

  1. Increasing homeownership among the African-American community in Allegheny County
  2. Overcoming the mentality of “I could never own a home.”
  3. Normalizing the credit issue in lending
